How Much Does a School Playground Cost?

How Much Does a School Playground Cost?

"How much does a school playground cost?" is the first question almost every school asks us, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on the size of the area, the surface you choose and the equipment that goes on it. A small early-years refresh and a full multi-zone playground are worlds apart. This guide explains what drives the price so you can budget realistically before you ask for a quote.

What actually drives the cost

Five things move the number more than anything else:

  • Area size. Playground work is priced largely by the square metre, so the footprint is the single biggest factor.
  • Surface type. Safety surfacing ranges from cost-effective grass mats up to seamless, colourful wet pour. The surface, and the depth it needs to protect against your equipment's fall height, make a real difference.
  • Equipment. A few pieces of play equipment and a full multi-play tower or MUGA sit at very different price points.
  • Groundworks and access. Sound existing tarmac keeps costs down; excavation, drainage or a hard-to-reach site adds to them.
  • Extras. Fencing, markings, canopies and floodlighting all add value, and cost.

Rough budget ranges

As a very general guide, and always subject to a site visit:

  • A small early-years refresh — new safety surfacing and a few low items — often starts in the low thousands.
  • A typical primary playground zone with surfacing, markings and a piece or two of equipment usually runs into the mid five figures.
  • A full scheme — a large multi-zone playground, or a fenced, floodlit MUGA — can reach the tens of thousands.

These are ballparks to help you plan, not quotes. The only way to get an accurate figure is a measured design for your specific space.

What should be included

A good quote is a fixed price covering design, groundworks, surfacing, equipment, installation and a post-installation inspection to BS EN 1176 and 1177. Watch for quotes that leave out groundworks or surfacing, because those gaps are where budgets slip.

Making the budget go further

You do not have to do everything at once. We often phase a scheme across terms or budget years, starting with the highest-impact area. There are also grants and funding routes worth exploring — see our guide on how to fund a school playground and, for PE-focused projects, using the PE and Sport Premium.

Get an accurate figure

The fastest way to know what your project will cost is a free site visit. We measure up, talk through how you want the space used, and send a clear design with a fixed price. Book a free site visit and quote and we will take it from there.

How much does a school playground cost?

It depends on the area size, the surfacing and the equipment. As a rough guide, a small early-years refresh can start in the low thousands, a typical primary zone runs into the mid five figures, and a full multi-zone playground or MUGA can reach the tens of thousands. The only accurate figure comes from a measured design for your space.

Can the cost be spread over time?

Yes. We often phase a project across terms or budget years, starting with the highest-impact area, so you can improve the playground in stages as funds allow.

What should a playground quote include?

A complete quote is a fixed price covering design, groundworks, safety surfacing, equipment, installation and a post-installation inspection to BS EN 1176 and 1177. Be wary of quotes that exclude groundworks or surfacing.
