Nursery & EYFS Outdoor Play Areas

Early years outdoor areas are for learning through play — soft, safe, sensory-rich spaces where two- to five-year-olds explore, move and make believe. We design EYFS gardens that meet the framework and the practicalities.

Nursery & EYFS Outdoor Play Areas

For nurseries and Reception, the outdoors is a classroom. The EYFS framework expects daily access to a rich outdoor environment, so the space needs safe surfacing, low accessible equipment, sensory and messy play, and shelter so it works in all weathers.

We design early years areas around free-flow play and the seven areas of learning: mud kitchens and water play for exploration, low climbers and springers for physical development, planting and role-play for imagination, all over soft, mud-free surfacing and, where you need it, a canopy so the area is usable year round.

FAQs

Nurseries & Early Years: common questions

What do you install in a nursery outdoor area?

Typically soft safety surfacing, low climbers and springers, a mud kitchen and water play, sensory and role-play features, shade or a canopy, and low anti-trap fencing with safe gates — all scaled and specified for under-fives.

Is the surfacing safe for very young children?

Yes. We use soft, impact-absorbing wet pour or artificial grass over a shockpad, tested to BS EN 1177, giving a level, mud-free surface that cushions falls and suits buggies and unsteady walkers.

Can you make the area usable in wet weather?

Yes. Free-draining surfacing keeps it mud-free, and a canopy or shade sail gives covered space so children can get outside whatever the weather.

We also design SEN and special school settings and primary schools. Explore sensory play and play equipment.
