BS EN 1176 sets out the safety requirements for play equipment, covering things like structural strength, guarding, finger and head entrapment, and safe distances around moving parts. BS EN 1177 is its partner standard, dealing with impact-absorbing surfacing and the Critical Fall Height it needs to protect against.
For a school, these standards are the shared benchmark that everyone works to: designers, installers, inspectors and repairers. Building and maintaining your playground to them is how you keep pupils safe and show, in plain terms, that you have taken play safety seriously.

The two standards are designed to be read side by side. BS EN 1176 tells you how tall a piece of equipment can be and how far a child might fall from it; BS EN 1177 then tells you how much protective surfacing you need underneath to soften that fall. Get one wrong and the other cannot do its job.
That is why Critical Fall Height matters so much. It is the greatest height from which a fall onto a given surface has been tested as acceptable, so your surfacing must be specified and maintained to match the equipment it sits beneath, not just laid to look neat.
BS EN 1176 addresses strength, guarding, entrapment and moving parts.

Critical Fall Height ties your surfacing to the equipment above it.
BS EN 1176 covers the play equipment itself, including its design, strength and safety features. BS EN 1177 covers the impact-absorbing surfacing beneath it and the fall heights that surfacing must be able to protect against. The two are used together.
Critical Fall Height is the maximum height from which a fall onto a particular surface has been tested and shown to give acceptable protection. Your surfacing must be chosen and maintained so its Critical Fall Height matches or exceeds the fall height of the equipment above it.
BS EN 1176 and BS EN 1177 are standards rather than laws, but they are the recognised benchmark for safe play. Meeting them is the accepted way to satisfy your wider health-and-safety and duty-of-care responsibilities, and inspectors assess against them.
Keep the records: the design and installation details, your routine and annual inspection reports, and evidence of any repairs. Together these show your equipment and surfacing are built and maintained to the standards, which is exactly what an inspector or auditor will look for.
