Rubber mulch is a natural, bark-effect safety surface made from bonded recycled rubber: porous, low-maintenance and a cost-effective way to hit high fall-height ratings, especially on trails and forest-school areas.
What it is
Rubber Mulch Playground Surfacing
Rubber mulch (bonded rubber mulch, or a play-bark alternative) is made from shredded recycled rubber bound with a clear resin and trowelled on site into a soft, natural-looking surface. It gives the woodland look of loose bark chippings without the downsides.
Unlike loose bark, rubber mulch does not rot, blow away, harbour splinters or need topping up. It is fully porous, so it drains freely, and it can be laid to a depth that achieves high Critical Fall Heights, tested to BS EN 1177, making it ideal under taller equipment and along nature trails.

Rubber mulch vs loose bark and wood chip
Loose bark is cheap to install but expensive to own: it decays, scatters, needs regular topping up, and its fall protection drops as it compacts and thins. Rubber mulch keeps the same natural appearance but stays put, stays porous and holds its impact protection year after year.
It is a popular choice for trim trails, adventure areas, tree surrounds and forest-school zones where a natural finish matters, and it works well combined with wet pour for equipment bays and pathways.

Is rubber mulch better than bark chippings?

Is rubber mulch safe for children?
Yes. It is made from clean, processed recycled rubber, bound so there are no loose pieces, and it is laid to the depth needed to protect against falls to BS EN 1177.
How long does rubber mulch last?
A bonded rubber mulch surface typically lasts around 8 to 10 years or more. Any worn patches can be re-bonded or topped up without replacing the whole area.
Can rubber mulch be laid on soil or grass?
Yes. Rubber mulch can be installed over a prepared sub-base on soil, grass or existing hard surfaces, which makes it flexible for trails and natural areas.
