Artificial Grass

Artificial Grass for Playgrounds

Artificial grass gives play areas a green, all-weather finish with no mud, mowing or standing water. Laid over a shockpad, it doubles as impact-absorbing safety surfacing tested to BS EN 1177.

What it is

Artificial Grass for Playgrounds

Artificial grass (synthetic turf, or fake grass) is a durable, all-weather alternative to natural grass for play areas, early-years gardens and MUGAs. Modern playground turf looks and feels like real grass but stays green and usable all year.

Laid over an impact-absorbing shockpad, artificial grass becomes a safety surface in its own right, cushioning falls to a tested Critical Fall Height under BS EN 1177, while eliminating the mud, puddles and mowing that make natural grass unusable for much of the school year.

  • Green all year — no mud or mowing
  • Shockpad makes it fall-safe
  • Free-draining, no puddles
  • Soft, natural feel underfoot
  • Great for early-years gardens & MUGAs
  • Low maintenance

Good to know

Where artificial grass works best

Artificial grass is ideal wherever natural grass gets churned to mud: early-years and nursery gardens, trim-trail runs, sports and multi-use games areas, and general play lawns. With a shockpad underneath it protects equipment; without one it makes a hard-wearing, natural-looking play lawn.

It pairs well with wet pour for equipment bays and with rubber mulch for trails, so we can mix textures across a scheme and give each zone the right surface.

Why Commercial Play

The benefits at a glance

All-year use

Stays green and usable through winter and summer, with no mud, mowing or bare patches.

Fall-safe with a shockpad

Over an impact shockpad it cushions falls to a tested Critical Fall Height under BS EN 1177.

Free-draining

A porous backing and sub-base let rain drain straight through, so there are no puddles.

Low maintenance

No mowing, watering or reseeding: an occasional brush keeps it looking fresh.

FAQs

Artificial Grass: common questions

Is artificial grass safe for playgrounds?

Yes. When laid over an impact-absorbing shockpad, artificial grass is tested to BS EN 1177 to cushion falls. It is non-toxic, free-draining and gives a soft, even surface for play.

Does artificial grass get muddy or waterlogged?

No. A porous backing and free-draining sub-base let water pass straight through, so, unlike natural grass, it does not turn to mud or hold puddles.

How long does playground artificial grass last?

Good-quality playground turf typically lasts around 8 to 10 years or more with light maintenance, depending on how heavily the area is used.

Can artificial grass be used for a MUGA or sports area?

Yes. Specialist sports turf and 2G/3G surfaces are designed for MUGAs and pitches. See our sports facilities for multi-use games areas.

Wet Pour Rubber, Playground Surfacing

Wet Pour Rubber

Wet pour is the seamless, poured-in-place rubber surface you see in most modern playgrounds: smooth, colourful, wheelchair-friendly and specified to the exact fall height your equipment needs.

Rubber Mulch, Playground Surfacing

Rubber Mulch

Rubber mulch is a natural, bark-effect safety surface made from bonded recycled rubber: porous, low-maintenance and a cost-effective way to hit high fall-height ratings, especially on trails and forest-school areas.

Grass Mats, Playground Surfacing

Grass Mats

Grass mats are rubber safety tiles laid into natural grass: the grass grows through for a natural look, while the mats give firm, fall-safe, mud-free footing under swings, slides and gateways.
