Outdoor Shelters and Trim Trails

This case study explores how Commercial Play transformed the outdoor space at Elmhurst School by installing outdoor shelters, an engaging trim trail, and interactive mud kitchens to enhance outdoor learning and play. Creating engaging, year-round outdoor learning spaces.

The Challenge

Elmhurst School, an independent preparatory institution in South Croydon, is dedicated to nurturing kindness, curiosity, and determination in every pupil. The school wanted to extend those values into its outdoor spaces, creating areas where children could explore, collaborate, and learn in the fresh air.

The goal was to develop multi-purpose outdoor zones that:

  • Support learning and play in all seasons
  • Encourage interaction, movement, and imagination
  • Provide sheltered areas for year-round use

However, the available space was compact and access was restricted, posing logistical challenges for installation.

Our Approach

Commercial Play designed a solution that maximised every inch of the site, combining practicality with imaginative play value. Careful planning ensured that access limitations and uneven ground were overcome without compromising on safety or aesthetics.

The project included:

  • Removal of existing artificial grass and timber sleeper unit from a raised area
  • Rendering and refinishing the front wall for a smooth, durable finish
  • Installation of new surfacing with Play Bark across both lower and raised zones for natural texture and safe, low-maintenance play
  • Creation of interactive play and learning elements through mud kitchens, a trim trail, and outdoor shelters

Key Features Installed

  • 2 x Outdoor Shelters – providing shaded, weather-proof spaces for outdoor learning and group activities
  • 2 x Mud Kitchens – encouraging creative, sensory play and cooperation among pupils
  • Rope Bridge – promoting balance, coordination, and confidence
  • Balance Beam – supporting physical development through active, imaginative challenges
  • Play Bark Surfacing (70m² total) – a natural, impact-absorbing surface enhancing safety and accessibility

Each feature was chosen to create a dynamic environment that blends education, creativity, and movement.

Results & Benefits

  • Year-Round Use: Shelters allow outdoor learning in all weather conditions.
  • Active Play: The trim trail and balance equipment support physical development and coordination.
  • Creative Exploration: Mud kitchens inspire imaginative, hands-on learning experiences.
  • Sustainable Design: Natural materials and thoughtful surfacing ensure durability and low maintenance.
  • Optimised Space: Clever design transformed a compact, tricky-access area into a functional, inspiring play zone.

Before & After

Before installation, the outdoor area at Elmhurst School was a compact, uneven space with limited play value. The raised section was dominated by ageing artificial grass and a timber sleeper structure, while the lower area lacked defined zones for learning or exploration. Access constraints also made the space difficult to use effectively for group activities.

After the transformation, the entire area has been reshaped into a natural, inviting environment that supports learning and play throughout the year. Play Bark surfacing brings warmth, texture, and safety, while new shelters, mud kitchens, and trim trail elements create distinct zones for creativity, movement, and outdoor collaboration. What was once a restricted, underused corner of the school is now a functional, engaging, and thoughtfully designed outdoor learning hub.

Why This Matters

This project shows how even small or challenging sites can be transformed into vibrant, educational outdoor environments. With the right design and materials, schools can extend their classrooms outdoors, fostering creativity, wellbeing, and teamwork throughout the year.
