Multi Play Units

Outdoor Learning, Elevated at St Andrew’s Prep

St Andrew’s Prep, set between the South Downs and Eastbourne coastline, has long championed the importance of outdoor learning. With a Woodland Classroom, Beach School, and a strong focus on wellbeing, the school understands how play builds confidence, cooperation, and curiosity.

This project shows how a multi-phase installation across two play areas, including the nursery, transformed the school grounds into a space that supports adventure, imagination, and development for all ages.

The Challenge

  • Replace ageing play equipment and bark-pit areas with modern, inclusive designs
  • Create two age-appropriate zones for early years and older pupils
  • Encourage imaginative, social, and physical play
  • Ensure safe, durable surfacing suitable for year-round use
  • Complete installation in multiple phases with minimal disruption to the school

Our Approach

Working closely with St Andrew’s Prep, we designed and installed bespoke-built play structures tailored to each age group. Key works included:

  • Nursery Area:

New two-tower multi-play unit (500mm high) featuring a clatter bridge, two slides, ramp and stepped access, dome windows, and fireman’s pole

Installation of 35 sqm of 40mm black wet pour safety surface

  • Upper School Area:

1.5m high wooden multi-play unit for ages 5–11 with two connected towers, bridges, climbers, slide, and role-play counters

Additional social seating and lookout window for imaginative play

  • Trim Trail Zone:

Added zig-zag balance, rope bridge, stepping pods, and drop-rope traverse

Finished with artificial grass and MOT sub-base for all-weather durability

Key Features Installed

  • Two bespoke multi-play towers (nursery and upper school)
  • Rope bridge and clatter bridge connections
  • Wet pour and artificial grass surfacing
  • Trim trail with balance and climbing features
  • Role-play counters and bench seating

All equipment was chosen for longevity, inclusivity, and safety, ensuring the new play spaces deliver lasting value and minimal maintenance demands.

Before & After

The original play areas featured dated equipment and uneven bark surfaces. After the transformation, pupils now enjoy dynamic, imaginative spaces, from high-energy climbing to calm, creative play. Each area encourages independence, teamwork, and confidence through safe challenge and exploration.

Results & Benefits

  • Multi-age play provision that supports physical and social development
  • Seamless integration with the school’s outdoor learning ethos
  • All-weather surfacing for year-round use
  • Long-term durability and reduced maintenance costs
  • Greater engagement and joy among pupils

Why This Matters for Schools

This project demonstrates how thoughtful design and phased planning can:

  • Maximise existing outdoor space
  • Create safe, inclusive play environments for all age groups
  • Strengthen outdoor learning and wellbeing initiatives
  • Deliver exceptional results within real-world school budgets
